A crazy year requires a crazy play, so for 2009 we are doing “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged).” This first podcast of the season was recorded on the streets of Greenwich Village in New York while director Mary McGinley ran on the streets to rehearsal at The Players Theatre. She explains how she ended up rehearsing there instead of New Bern, NC.

Fight Director Carlo Rivieccio, who is also playing Mercutio, and actor Anthony Augello, who portrays Tybalt, discuss the approach to many people’s favorite part of this classic play - the sword fights! And many people would be surprised to learn that the actors don’t get up and just hack away at each other. For the sake of telling the story, and the actors’ safety, each move is carefully choreographed and well thought out before anyone even picks up a sword. Listen as Mary discusses this process with Carlo and Anthony.

Romeo & Juliet - The Cast

We get our first chance to meet the stars of “Romeo and Juliet,” Quentin McCuiston and Beth Jastroch, at home in New York, before they come to stay with us in New Bern, NC. During a recent photo shoot in Central Park, in the shadow of the Delacourte Theatre, I caught our two stars in between shots and asked them for their first thoughts on approaching the roles of these famous lovers.
